Architecture inspired by the road

Sometimes amazing inspiration comes from unusual places. Would Henry Ford have thought that someday the automobile would inspire great architecture? Two of the top high-end car companies Porsche and BMW have come up with some fantastic structures to house their creations.

I had the chance to visit the BMW museum, by Wolf Prix of Coop Himmelblau, and was amazed how stunning the interior spaces were. Cars drive up a 900 ft ramp and rest on display under a enormous cantilevered canopy free of interior structural supports. This can all be viewed from an elevated bridge that also winds its way through the entire complex. More dynamic than any almost any art museum - the use of space and circulation is superb.
