This particular part of Thailand holds a special place in my heart. I have been coming here since a child when it was a just a remote island with a total population of 5000. One had to ride an old train or rickety bus only to be dumped onto a gasoline spewing ferry for 2 hours to get there. Now with an international airport and immense support staff throughout the island you can get there in a 30 minute flight from Bangkok to its white sands. Still a peaceful destination it has kept much of its charm because of the 2-3 storey height restrictions of the hotels. Nightlife has grown immensely and the shopping is great but the development has not spoiled its beautiful beaches, nor the quality of service and the smile of all Thai people.

The food is fantastic anywhere from the 50 cent side cars to the 4 star hotels. Back packers mingle with the mega jetset and the Reggae pub places great music all night long. Hard core scuba divers take trips out to remote islands and there is every water sport imaginable. Rent a motorcycle or open air Jeep ( or luxury vehicle of your choice ) and bomb around the island. For an even more remote experience go to Koh Tao or Koh Pangan. There are butterfly sanctuaries and a great aquarium/ tiger zoo.

It goes without saying that when you are ready to kick back and get away from everything p the Four Seasons in Koh Samui is rated as one of the absolute best in the world. In almost any hotel in Thailand guests are treated well, but here you have nearly god like status. All your belongings are attended to without question discreetly cleaned folded as if you were the King himself. There is no better place to recharge the batteries. - Ecomanta
